Thassos town, also known as Limenas, or quite simply, the port,
is both the administrative and the commercial centre of the island.
Here you will find all of the facilities that you would expect
from a Greek island, as well as many more that you would not expect
to find!
It offers sophisticated bars and restaurants, snack bars, supermarkets
and mini markets, shops with stylish clothes, shoes, and all holiday
requirements, pharmacies, doctors, Post Office, telecommunications
and the police station, travel agents and tour operator's offices.
You can find Internet cafes, top up your mobile phone, have your
digital photographs printed, send flowers to loved ones, buy champagne
and chocolates and get current copies of newspapers in your own
language.
It is also the terminus for the local round island bus service
as well as for the ferries, flying dolphins, and taxis.
It has a thriving marina, extensive parking, and two small beaches
on its outskirts. It has an all year-round population, so that
you can while away the hours, watching the fishermen landing their
catches, mending their nets, repairing their boats as well as
all the other facilities that the residents of the island require.
It offers water taxi services to local beaches, further down
the coast, and as a town, provides a wide range of entertainment
for all ages, and all requirements.
Here you will find the local museum, numerous antiquities - beautifully
excavated and explained, and access to the ancient theatre and
Acropolis.
It is located in a sheltered bay, with the densely wooded green
hills of the island all round, offering walks in and around its
winding streets or further out into the mountains or around the
coast to the other bays.
It is absolutely ideal for anybody who wants to be close to the
action, as well as being part of a traditional community, able
to find quiet areas and chat to the locals, as well as finding
secluded bays, only a few moments walk or drive away. |
